Biblical Focus: Moses
Exodus 34:29 (NLT)
When Moses came down Mount Sinai carrying the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant, he wasn’t aware that his face had become radiant because he had spoken to the LORD.
One phrase in this verse should stop us: he wasn’t aware.
Moses had spent forty days in God’s presence. When he came down, his face was glowing so brightly that the people were afraid to come near. Everyone could see it. Except Moses.
This is a mark of genuine transformation: the transformed person is often the last to notice. Real Christlikeness is not self-conscious. The moment we start admiring our own spiritual progress, the glow begins to fade. Pride is the one thing that cannot coexist with the glory of God.
There is a dangerous counterfeit. It is the person who works hard at appearing spiritual: the right vocabulary, the visible devotion, the polished testimony. But that is self-generated shine, and it cannot last. Moses did nothing to his face. He simply spent time with God, and the glory rubbed off.
So here is your challenge: stop trying to look transformed. Stop checking your reflection. Go up the mountain. Spend unhurried time with God, and let others notice what you cannot see.
One caution. The fact that you cannot see your own glow does not mean you should assume you have one. The opposite question also matters: Do people leave time with you feeling they have been near God? Or only near you?
The Practice of Transformation
Plan an extended block of time with God this week, an hour or more, with no phone and no agenda. Go up your own “mountain.” Don’t measure the results.
✦ Reflection ✦
Are you working harder at looking spiritual or at being with God?
Prayer: Lord, I don’t want to admire my own reflection. Let me spend so long with You that Your glory shows without my knowing. Amen.
The glow comes from the mountain, not the mirror.
